Courageous Man Utd Make Statement Performance in Chelsea Draw

Manchester United delivered what many are describing as a "statement" display against reigning title holders Chelsea, though they were left hoping for rather than the solitary point earned from the encounter.

Manchester United managed to halt Chelsea's perfect beginning to the new season as their defender's superb strike equalized the Chelsea player's exquisite first goal.

The draw represented a important achievement for the Red Devils, who had before this lost in ten and drawn just one of their prior eleven league encounters with the Blues.

However, manager Marc Skinner expressed "frustration" that his side secured only one point rather than maximum points as they extended their unbeaten run to five games.

Throughout the match, Ella Toone wasted opportunities on either side of the interval, while Jess Park should have converted with a lofted attempt before narrowly missing with a dipping volley.

Ex- England player Fara Williams stated: "I felt like Manchester United will probably be regretting missed opportunities. They generated plenty of quality chances and maybe with better finishing in the final third, they would have come out on top."

However, Manchester United could have just as easily walked away with no points from the fixture.

Shot-stopper Phallon Tullis-Joyce made a excellent late save to prevent Chelsea's Keira Walsh, while the defenders Maya Le Tissier and Sandberg made crucial blocks during the final minutes to keep Chelsea at bay.

Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis added: "United are the first team to take points off Chelsea this season. If they need to put out a message to their own club and reaffirm what Manchester United's ambition is, they've deserved all that."

Result Shows Improvement of Developing Manchester United

This big inquiry at the beginning of this season - the same one that's been posed over the last six WSL seasons - is if any team can end Chelsea's supremacy.

Chelsea won last term's trophy by remaining 22 games without defeat in Sonia Bompastor's debut season as manager - contributing to a three trophies as they won the Women's FA Cup and League Cup too.

Actually, it's been more than five hundred days since Chelsea last lost a league game - a 4-3 defeat at Liverpool on 1 May, 2024.

Manchester United narrowly missed to ending that run on Friday night in a top-two clash and Skinner was impressed of "an extremely brave performance" from his players.

The manager stated: "We're building. You can observe it, you can sense it. We are frustrated to not win the game. The opportunities we generated, few teams could produce that against Chelsea. So for us to do that and in the way we accomplished it was praise to them [the players]."

Since their promotion from the Women's Championship in 2019, United have rapidly emerged as WSL title challengers, ending up just 2 points behind Chelsea in the 2022-23 season.

The next season they won the FA Cup - their inaugural major women's trophy.

While a tie against the present league leaders may be deemed a missed opportunity for United, ex- England striker the analyst thought it demonstrated how far the team has come.

She remarked: "You have to look at that steady performance. They've played eleven times against Chelsea now and only drawn once, now the second time, so I think it's truly positive for their consistency and what they're doing as a club and a squad. It proves it's effective and they're getting better."

Questioned if Skinner deserved more recognition for United's rise to compete with more traditional clubs, White continued: "What he's done with these players, the philosophy, the DNA, how resolute they are. He does not have the amount of money or been able to spend the sum of money the such teams of Chelsea, Arsenal or [Manchester] City have achieved."

What Will This Affect the Championship Battle?

The Blues' perfect start may have concluded, but they nonetheless stay in first place on 13 points - 2 points ahead of United.

But Skinner stated his side's performance at the Progress With Unity Stadium - where Chelsea secured last season's title - demonstrated the Blues will not have it so straightforward this time around.

He added: "This proves to Chelsea they're not just going to walk the league. We need to ensure everyone is providing a challenge. I think the league is improving and you saw the quality, that we are progressing as well."

Blues manager Bompastor was "not happy" with Chelsea's performance, but said a draw was "not a bad result at Manchester United".

Questioned if United were title challengers, she added: "There are many teams being genuine competition for us, each game brings a distinct challenge. You must be prepared for each game."

Manchester City, who lost to Chelsea in the season opener, could close the gap on the leaders to a single point if they beat Arsenal at home on the weekend.

Last season's second-place Arsenal, in the meantime, have work to make up after losing points against both United and Aston Villa, and boss Renee Slegers will be targeting the Gunners' home game against Chelsea on November 8th as a way to get themselves back in the race.
