Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
